The Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) has evolved dramatically from the rigid Waterfall days to the adaptive, collaborative methodologies used by modern engineering teams. Understanding SDLC models and their metrics is essential for delivering quality software predictably.

Waterfall: When It Still Works

Agile: The Default Approach

Scrum: The Most Popular Framework

Scrum structures work in time-boxed sprints (typically 2 weeks) with defined roles: Product Owner (prioritizes backlog), Scrum Master (facilitates process), and Development Team (self-organizing). Kanban: Flow-Oriented Development

Kanban visualizes work on a board with columns (To Do, In Progress, Review, Done) and WIP (Work In Progress) limits to prevent bottlenecks. Unlike Scrum, Kanban has no fixed iterations — work flows continuously. Key metrics: lead time (request to delivery), cycle time (start to completion), throughput (items per week), and cumulative flow diagrams. Scrumban: The Hybrid

Combining Scrum’s structure with Kanban’s flexibility, Scrumban uses: Kanban boards with WIP limits, on-demand planning (no fixed sprint lengths), continuous improvement through retrospectives, and metrics from both frameworks. It’s particularly effective for support and maintenance teams where work arrives unpredictably.

  • Developer Experience (DevEx): Flow state, feedback loops, cognitive load.
